Tuna Tostadas to Impress Any Dinner Party
Hosting or attending a dinner party and tasked with apps? You could go the boring route and choose a bunch of expensive cheeses from the case at Whole Foods, or you up up something super easy that will be sure to impress any dinner party you’re at. Here’s my recipe for perfect Tuna Tostada’s
Ingredients:
10 High-quality flour tortillas (Here’s my pick)
1.5 LBS Sushi Grade Tuna
1/4 Cup Bachan’s Original Japanese BBQ Sauce (But try any other sauce they have!)
1 TBS Toasted sesame seeds
10 Shallots, sliced thin on mandolin
1 Bunch of radishes, sliced thin on mandolin
Cilantro
Canola Oil
Step 1: Frying your tostadas and shallots
In a deep cast iron pan or dutch oven, preheat 1-2 inches of canola oil to 375 degrees. Gently lay 1-2 tortillas in the oil depending on the size of your pan. Fry for 2-3 minutes on the first side until puffed. Flip and fry for an additional minute until golden brown. Pull out of the pan and place on a paper towel lined baking sheet. Sprinkle with kosher salt. Repeat with remaining tortillas. Once complete, transfer the sliced shallots into the oil. Fry for 4-5 minutes until crispy. NOTE - you can buy pre-made tostadas and fried shallots, but this method is super easy and safe - a great introduction to frying!
Step 2: Prepping the Tuna
Using your sharpest knife, slice the tuna into 1/4 in x 1/4 in strips. Then, cut across the strips to form cubes. Try to cut through the fish with the fewest number of slices possible, this will yield the cleanest pieces. Transfer tuna to a glass bowl and mix in Bachan’s, sesame seeds and gochugaru. Set asside
Step 3: Assembly
Arrange your tostadas on a large, flat tray (it is ok if they overlap). Scoop tuna onto the tostadas making sure to spread evenly. Top with radishes, fried shallots and cilantro. I would recommend doing this last step close to when your guests arrive to ensure the tostadas remain crispy. Enjoy!
